A STYLISH original vintage poster from 1936 by the artist John Armstrong (1893-1973) illustrating the birth of the British mail coach service in the 18th century.

Size  92cm x 74cm

Condition  Good. There is wear at the margins, and a 10cm tear on the left, with no paper loss. If you would like to know more please get in touch. 

Background  Known as a surrealist painter, Armstrong also created posters for Shell and served as an official artist in the Second World War. His subject here, for the General Post Office, is the demonstration delivery of post from Bristol to London in 1784, when the entrepreneur John Palmer proved to the government that a well-run coach service – rather than a man on horseback – was the most efficient means of national postal distribution.
