Background
The shrine of the Apostle St James at Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain is one of Europe’s leading places of pilgrimage. The Camino is the pilgrim’s way, the walking routes coming from places far away across Spain and France which merge on Spain’s north coast. Years such as 1965, when St James’s Day (26 July) falls on a Sunday, are designated Holy Years, when pilgrimage to the site carries special religious rewards. The poster is signed ‘Macias’ at top right. It was printed in Spain for the Subsecretaria de Turismo.
