Background
Wilkinson (1878-1971) was among the greatest of all British poster artists. Probably best known for his maritime paintings – and for his invention of the distinctive 'dazzle' style of ship camouflage in the First World War – he did most of his poster work for railway companies. This is one of his most famous and most reproduced landscapes. One critic described the treatment of the crags as magical. The mountain is not identified but appears to be Quinag, whose name comes from the Gallic word for a milk pail. LMS is the London, Midland and Scottish Railway company and LNER the London and North Eastern Railway. The printer is Staffords of Netherfield and the poster is also marked 'E.R.O. 53351'.
