Background In 1966 the Picasso Museum at the Palacio Aguilar was new, having been established in the Catalan capital in 1963 contrary to the wishes of the Madrid government of Francisco Franco. Most of the works exhibited were from the collection of the artist's lifelong friend Jaume Sabartés. The Barcelona Suite paintings were painted in Picasso's early years in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. The identity of the subject here is unknown, though the painting is sometimes known as 'Margot'.
