Votivkirche, Vienna, Austria, 1950s
A CHARMING original vintage poster of a scene in Vienna looking from a high viewpoint point towards the historic Votivkirche, with 1950s traffic flowing beneath.

Background The Gothic Votivkirche, built to give thanks for the survival of Franz Joseph after an assassination attempt, stands in contrast to the bright, busy modern foreground captured by Albert Herndl. A fire engine stands on the Schottengasse below, and a bus halts at the bus station, while in the traffic and parked to the left we see Mercedes, Renaults, Opels, Volkswagens and a smart convertible Porsche.
