Background Famous for its mineral water, Évian in Haute Savoie was at its most fashionable as a resort more than a century ago, a haunt of royalty and celebrities. This picture, looking along Rue Jean Monnet close to the ferry port, captures it as the modern tourism era began, with a coach and cars in the foreground and the harbour and steamers beyond.
