A SUITABLY elegant original vintage 1950 poster issued by the UK National Savings organisation with the slogan: ‘Fashions change but not the habit of thrift.’

Background
The poster shows a parade of 27 figures in costumes from 850 AD to 1895, over the faint background of a Tudor map of Britain. There is a short text commentary by James Laver (1899-1975), who was a pioneer of costume history at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and also an acknowledgement to the 1938 book Historical Costumes of England, by Nancy Bradfield. The poster was printed for HMSO by Fosh & Cross, London.
