Outposts of Empire – Ceylon, 1937
A VERY FINE original vintage poster from 1937 in the 'Outposts of Empire' series created for the General Post Office (GPO) by the Australian artist John Vickery and showing a mailman in sergeant's stripes against a background of palm trees and a rural post office in what is now Sri Lanka.

Background Vickery (1906-83) was a distinguished artist who spent most of his career in the United States and was a friend of Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. He produced four works in this series for the Posters for Schools scheme, showing the postal service at work in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Australia, Barbados and Ceylon.
