Background 'The Playboy of the Western World', first performed in Dublin in 1907, is regarded as a milestone in Irish drama. This production was directed by Bill Bryden, at the time a resident director at the National. Jack Yeats was a friend of the playwright and collaborated with him on a number of projects, including illustrating the published play text. Horse-races along Irish beaches are the theme of some of Yeats's best-known works.
