Background The first Shakespeare Memorial Theatre opened on this site in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1879. The building seen in the poster replaced it in 1932. Designed by Elizabeth Scott, it was the first important public building in Britain created by a woman architect. It became the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 1961. The poster is undated, but the Travel Association of the United Kingdom operated under that name between 1945 and 1950.
