Whitby Abbey, Yorkshire, England, 1940s

£240.00

A FINE original vintage poster from the 1940s showing the ruined Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire.

Size  76cm x 51cm

Condition  Very good. Minor paper loss on margin at extreme top left corner. If you would like know more please get in touch.

Background  Once a vast monastic complex, the ruin stands on the cliff above the port of Whitby with moorland stretching behind – hence the poster slogan, 'Between Heather and Sea'. The location is internationally known from the novel Dracula: this is where the vampire count comes ashore in England. The picture shows the east end of the abbey, built in the 13th century, seen from across the abbey pond. The poster is undated, but the publisher operated under that name from 1945 to 1950.
