A VERY FINE original vintage poster from 1956 giving a view of the magnificent Roman amphitheatre in the southern French city of Nîmes taken by pioneer aerial photographer Ray Delvert.

Background The scene in Roman times of gladiator combats staged before crowds of 20,000 and more, the Nîmes amphitheatre is of the the largest and best preserved of its kind. The grand buildings of the Lycée Alphonse Daudet can be seen behind. Delvert (1914-1992) was a prolific aerial photographer who piloted his own plane. He is also known for his role in developing 'photo-finish' technology for the horse-racing industry.
