Background The gorges are a famous canyon cut into limestone uplands by the river Tarn as it flows westward. The poster shows part of the most spectacular stretch, the ‘détroits’ or straits, with one of the small tourist boats traditionally operated by the Tarn ‘bateliers’. The province of Languedoc no longer exists: it is part of today’s Occitanie region.
